“My Virgen de Guadalupe is not the mother of God. She is God. She is a face for a god without a face, an indigena for a god without ethnicity, a female deity for a god who is genderless, but I also understand that for her to approach me, for me to finally open doors and accept her, she had to be a woman like me….
Blessed art thou, Lupe, and, therefore, blessed am I.”
- From Sandra Cisneros, “Guadalupe the Sex Goddess”

Hoy, 19 de enero, el cantautor y compositor José Alfredo Jiménez cumpliría 90 años. Lo recordamos con algunos de sus temas más famosos
When you take a day off from the usual writing lessons to have your kids write letters to Obama of what to complete in his last year of presidency. Some talk about pollution or the drought. The majority talk about gangs, drugs, violence, racism, high prices…. One student mentions ICE and his fear of ICE. Terrified that his parents will be taken by ICE. A few hours pass and the parent of a different student (a student that you had a year ago) comes up to you asking for a huge favor, struggles to find the words to ask you for this huge favor. It takes everything out of her to ask you to write a character reference for her husband, father of one of your most memorable students, because he is “illegal”, “undocumented”. And in that moment you vow to do anything possible to help this family.

I really miss San Diego. It’s pretty much the perfect city. But I know if I ever move back I’ll miss LA.
